Work in Progress

Work in Progress So. I decided that I needed a new banner. Alright, so thats a lie. Ben decided for me that I needed a new banner. See, when Ben sets up the original blog for us, it has a default banner that says replace this ASAP, you slacker. Well, I got tired of being called a slacker every time I looked at my page, but I have no one around to help me make a new banner. It will include a picture of your truly, so you can all see how gorgeous I really am in real life. As you probably know, its kind of hard to take a picture of yourself, and the people I live with (known collectively as my family) have all been very busy lately. So I decided to pull a Mitra and put up a really simple temporary design for the time being. So I made the very simple banner you see above. The next step was to upload it. Any images we bloggers post here need to be hosted in our Athena lockers. All MIT students get Athena accounts, which allow you to have your @mit.edu email as well as some server space with MIT. This space is known as your Athena locker. So Ben sent me a link with info about how to upload to this Athena locker, only Ben is a crazy Mac user and my parents (who buy the computers we use) would be so totally confused by the concept of a different kind of OS that they always stick to Windows. So Bens help didnt really work. So after searching unsuccessfully for similar info about Windows, I stumbled across this program called Filezilla, which supposedly allows you to upload files securely. So I downloaded it and started trying it out. I had no instructions, but I figured hey, I got into MIT, how hard can it be? I totally know what FTP is (file transfer protocol) and I think I might have used it once before, so lets see what I can come up with. Well, after hours of hard work and blundering around without a clue as to what I was doing, I finally. gave up and hosted the image on http://photobucket.com/ *hangs head in shame* But never fear! This is only a temporary solution. I am still working on the problem and once I figure it out, I will be sure to post an informative entry for you other clueless 09ers. Right. So, just a note- the rest of the design is also a work in progress. Ill be working on the other templates in my spare time over the next few days, so if you ever load this page and the font is some hideous shade of purple or something, dont be alarmed. Its only on accident. Fortunately, I actually do know what Im doing when it comes to html and css, so Im very much looking forward to this part of the project. Ethics, Values and Self-awareness: What I Bring to Social Work As I learn about the social work field, I gain increasingly clear perspectives from which I can begin to discern the inherent strengths and challenges I will bring to my practice. Do Dandelions Burn in Colors

Have you seen the photo of a dandelion that appears to be burning in different colors? If you do an image search online, youll find the original photo, taken by Gregory Gomer, which shows a dandelion burning in usual fire colors. So, the viral image appears to have been Photoshopped or otherwise enhanced. Its still a great excuse for a fire experiment! For the past few weeks, Ive burned every wish dandelion or dandelion seed head that I could find in South Carolina, Texas, and Nebraska. Ive burned dandelions from ditches, dandelions from fields, dandelions treated with chemicals, and dandelions spritzed with flame colorants. A couple of my results are shown above. While you can get a dandelion to burn in multiple colors, the colors seem restricted to shades of orange, yellow and red. My next test is to burn a whole bouquet of dandelions, just in case I havent been using a large enough sample size. Have you burned dandelions trying to get the color effect? Creating Assessments That Engage and Motivate Students and Contribute to Deeper Learning: An Inquiry Study To become a master teacher a passionate educator must constantly seek to gain insight into and improve upon her practice. A master teacher is not merely a person who becomes a certified practitioner, passes all of her evaluations, and completes the required amount of professional development in order to reach tenure status. Nor is a master teacher someone who merely puts in the time and teaches for 10,000 hours (Gladwell 2008). In order to achieve mastery, one must accept that mastery in and of itself is an ever-evolving process. That being said, there are habits of masterful practitioners that are important to consider. Robyn Jackson (2009) describes seven principles of masterful teachers . Rather than discuss every principle in her book, I will point out two principles that will help frame my rationale for this inquiry project: Principle number one, â€Å"Master teachers start where their students are† (p. 27) and principle number five, â€Å"Master teachers use feed back to help them and their students get better† (p. 125). Going to college and getting a degree is basically the admission ticket for getting a job, I  believe more students should go to college not less. College is seen as the open sesame of a good job and a desirable way for adolescences to transit to adulthood. Neither reason is as persuasive as it first appears. One of this views main proponents is a student ability and not just academic ability,(Murray). According to this view a student will pursue a career interest in what they are good at; some student are usually undecided, they dont know what their career interest is. Liberal arts education is perfect for undecided students in my point of view. In sum, then, the issue is not many people enjoy reading for hour after hour, day after day, no matter what the material maybe, and if you are going to absorb such material, you must in some sense enjoy the process. My own view is that if you have a career interest in a particular subject, take classes pertaining to your interest. I find liberal arts education quiet absurd for career-oriented students. Though I concede that if your passion lay in the field of liberals arts, dont be afraid to pursue it especially if college oriented majors makes you miserable; its whatever you want. I still maintain that college oriented major will undoubtedly give you immediate benefits. For example, When high-school graduates think that obtaining a B.A. will help them get a higher-paying job, they are only narrowly correct. Although some might object that going straight into the working world after high school is the best decision. Many believe with that experience they wouldnt need a B.A, I would reply most jobs these days require a B.A. but by obtaining a B.A doesnt normally mean you will make more than a person without a B.A. thus this is important to me because this decision can have a big impact on our life. For some of us who move on to study at a college or university, we will end of in a successful job and others will not end up in a satisfactory job. Then they are those who are talented and can use their talent to become successful.

In general, the two tests have gotten much more similarsince the SAT was revamped in 2016,but there are still a few differences that may sway you towards one or the other. If you score much higher on one test than the other, I recommend that you study for and take the test you did better on. If your scores are pretty close and you're still not sure which exam to take, keep reading. Next, I recommend checkingwhether one exam or the other is required at your school. It's easier to study for a test you're already familiar with, so if your school requires either the ACT or the SAT, you'll want to seriously consider sticking to the requiredtest. This doesn't actually make the SAT easier,since its actual questions tend to be harder, but it does mean thatthe ACT feels like more of a time crunch than the SAT. As such, doing well on the ACTrequires calm in the face of time limits. If you struggle to move through material quickly or tend to panic, you'll likely do better with the SAT. #2: Can’t Stand the Idea of Not Getting to Every Question On the SAT, you have enough time to get to most of the questions, as long as you use it wisely. On the ACT, you probably won't finish all of the sections unless you're scoring a 30 or above. If you have an obsessive need to answer every single question, you should stick tothe SAT. #3: Have a Hard Time Spotting Details When You Read SAT reading questions almost always give you the line number where you can find the relevant information. Even if they don't give you the exact location, the questions are in order, so it's rarely difficult to find information in the passage. ACT reading questions, on the other hand, are randomlyordered and frequently don't give line numbers, so finding specific details in the passage is one of the trickiest parts. If you struggle with retaining or finding details, you will probably prefer the SAT. #4: Struggle With Geometry ACT math has over three times as many geometry questions as the math section on the redesigned SAT. Plus, for the ACT, you need to memorize all the formulas, while on the SAT you're given them at the beginning of the section. If you have a very hard time with geometry, consider taking the SAT. #5: Want to Encounter as Little Science as Possible The ACT has a science section; the SAT does not. If you dislike science or struggle with quantitative thinking, you will probably prefer the SAT. The redesigned SAT does include science questions in each of its threesections, so there's no way to escape science entirely. (Image: m00by/Flickr) Take the ACT If You... #1:Struggle With Vocabulary Although it no longer has sentence completion questions, the redesigned SATstill tests more challenging vocabulary on both the reading and writing sections. It also has harder passages on the reading section and more vocab questions overall. The ACT is the better test if you want to avoid higher-level words like "satiated" and "apprehensive" and older passages with challenging language. #2: Can't Always Explain How You Know an Answer Is Correct One of the big changes to the SAT is the addition of evidence questions on the reading section. These questions ask you to point to the part of the passage that supports your answer to another question- #14 is an example: Evidencequestions aren't as novel as they might seem at first, since, in theory, you should always be able to point to the support for your answer in the passage. But if this is a skill you really struggle with, consider taking the ACT instead. #3:Are Intimidated by Doing Math Without a Calculator The SAT has a no-calculator section, so if the idea of doing math without a calculator has you completely freaked out, you may want to stick to the ACT. However, the no-calculator section really doesn't require any complicated calculations. In fact,all of the math questions on both testscanbe done without a calculator, though some are rather challenging. The question is really whether you feel comfortable doing some basic calculations by hand. If not, the SAT will be a challenge for you. #4: Prefer That Different Topics Be Tested in Different Sections One of the goals of the SAT redesign is to integrateimportant skills across all three sections, so there's more overlap between the different sections than on the ACT. One key example of this new policy is the presence of quantitative questions in the reading and writing sections of the SAT. If you'd prefer to avoid this kind of concept mixing, stick with the ACT. #5: Have a Solid Grasp of Experimental Design If you like science, and especially if you have a good understanding of how experiments are built and know the difference between independent and dependentvariables, consider taking the ACT. The ACT asks a lot ofquestionsabout experimental design whilethe SAT new science questions are solely focused on reading charts and graphs. A strong grasp of these concepts will give you a considerable leg up on the ACT. #6: Like to Give Your Opinion The ACT essay is all about arguing for your own point (unlike the SAT essay, which is about analyzing someone else's argument). If you enjoystating your opinion and marshaling examples to back it up, then you will probably prefer the ACT essay. Remember, however, that you may not need to take the essay at all and that, even if you do, it doesn't affect your overall score. You can choose your own adventure in studying. It sums up all of the ideas above (except those relating to the optional essays) in one easy-to-use chart. To use it, just go through and check"yes" or "no" for each question. Then tally up your answers and give yourself one point for each "yes." Scroll down for an explanation of what your score means. Question Yes No Do you perform well under time pressure? Are you okay with not answering every question on a test? Do you struggle to explain why you think an answer is correct? Do you have a hard timewith high level vocab words? Can you spot details ina passage without reading it closely? Do you dread doing math without a calculator? Do you excel at geometry? Do you prefer each topic be tested separately? Do you understand experimental design? Do you like science? Let's go through what your score means: 1-3: You're an SAT person! If you answered "no" to most of the questions, you'll probably find the SAT more your style. You don't mind slightly harder questions as long asyou don't have to rush and don't have to cover too much material. 4-7: You can do either! If you answered "no" and "yes" roughly the same amount, you will probably find the tests equally approachable. If you're willing to put in the time, try taking one practice test for each and see if you have a strong preference. 8-10: You'll likethe ACT! If you answered mostly "yes," then you're more of an ACT person. You don't mind moving quickly, memorizing material, or answering questions about science. What's Next?
